Fibromyalgia And Acupuncture Health InformationFibromyalgia And Acupuncture Health Information: What Is The Disorder Fibromygalia And How Is It Treated ?Fibromyalgia is a condition that involves chronic pain in the muscles, joints, and tendons. Other symptoms include fatigue, stiffness, sleep disturbance, bowel problems, bladder complications, numbness, tingling, depression, anxiety, and post traumatic stress disorder. Fibromyalgia is also known as Fibromyositis and Fibrositis. The cause has not been determined but may be linked to an infection, a virus, or physical or emotional trauma. Sometimes emotional trauma can be reflected outward in a physical manner. The disorder is most common in women between the ages of twenty and fifty yeas of age. Diagnosis includes an assessment of the symptoms. Normally a person would have had three months of pain in at least eleven of the eighteen different areas that the illness can effect. Treatment for Fibromyalgia can include a combination of physical therapy, exercise programs, and stress relief methods. Drugs can also be prescribed to help manage some of the symptoms that may occur such as depression and anxiety. Muscle relaxers are usually given to reduce some of the physical discomfort. Other things that can help are adjusting sleeping patterns, changing to a more well balanced diet, and removing caffeine from one's diet. Acupuncture has proven to be a very effective method of pain management for Fibromyalgia. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that deals with the stimulation of different points on the body in order to promote relaxation and both physical and mental wellness. The way acupuncture works is that an area is set for the patient to lay. This area is usually a table covered with tiny metal hair thin needles. The patient lies down on these needles which are set up to touch the the proper pressure points. The pressure on the points from the needles will sooth the pain. Acupuncture treatment can take a couple of weeks before any positive results are seen. Insurance companies may assist with payment. |
